Will, Tyson and Chris painting

We started work on Monday with high spirits as we began painting and clearing space for the new boys’ building. Whether working inside or outside, it was hot! Sometimes it feels like it would be so easy to give up or complain, but I am always energized by my surroundings.

Just knowing small glimpses into the background of some of these kids make me wonder why I ever complain at all. It is so easy to take our necessities and things that are easily accessible to us for granted. By just painting these kids’ rooms brings a little bit more sunshine into their life, even if the whole process does not run the way we think it should.

I feel like just doing simple things for Casa Hogar teaches me so much about the culture and about the people, which is truly beautiful. Our hard work and sweat always pays off in the end as children swarm to play, talk, and just lean on you for the few hours of free time.

They enjoy the simple things, like the interaction with people who will love them for just a moment in their lives. If there is anything I have learned from the past few days, it’s that I should not take for granted the love I have at home. No matter how much they try, some of these kids can not forget the past, those who scarred and neglected them. Despite this, they smile and smother others with their innocent love and in return, I will never fail to smother them too.
