Moments that Matter: A Camp Recap
Written by Caroline Clark, our Student Ministry Coordinator
When you think about summer camp, what comes to mind?
It’s fair to assume that most immediately think of slip ‘n slides, the blob, floating on a lazy river, or playing games that involve throwing food.
While our time at Camp Kalaqua with Southland Student Camps DID include launching our friends off the blob, kayaking the springs, and playing “guess the food” on stage, I want to let you in on one of my favorite things about camp—time to slow down and walk in conversation with students—time to hear about their fears, struggles, and joys in life.
After Brian Morgan, our evening speaker, encouraged us with a word on how Jesus gives us an example of how we should handle our emotions, we gathered as a church group into a huddle and went through discussion questions. This more intimate time as a church allowed us to recognize that we are better together. It was an honor to witness the students’ realizations that no one is alone in their struggles, doubts, anger, fear, or pain.
I leave camp encouraged by each student who took the time to dive into what they believe, why they believe it, and invite us leaders to join them in this journey through discipleship conversation.
