Description:
Little Miss Judgy is quick to judge others, often making assumptions or jumping to conclusions without considering or investigating the full picture. Instead of focusing on her own shortcomings, she criticizes and even condemns those around her. She ignores the log in her own eye from Matthew 7:1-5.
Instead of practicing humility and empathy towards others, Little Miss Judgy may be critical and harsh, pointing out the faults of those around her without recognizing her own flaws. She may also struggle with forgiveness and may hold grudges or seek revenge against those who have wronged her.
Blind to her own sin, she misses the opportunity to cultivate greater compassion, camaraderie, and understanding by focusing on others’ faults and shortcomings.
Scripture:
Matthew 7:1-5 — Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Additional Scripture:
- John 8:1-11 — 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”]]
- James 4:11-12 — 11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
- Romans 2:1-3 — 1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
- 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
- Luke 6:37 — Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven
Practices:
At the end of the day, answer these questions:
- At the end of your day: Notice your criticism of others.
- Name who you are criticizing.
- Confess and repent of your need for Jesus and receive the grace that Jesus has forgiven you.
